Bio of Kim Jong-Il


 

The supreme leader of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-Il died on December 17, 2011 at the age of 69. His youngest son Kim Jong-un will be his rightful successor, becoming the third leader in the Kim’s hierarchy. The import events of Chairman Kim’s life are as follow:

  • Chairman Kim Jong-Il was born in a secret military camp on Baekdu Mountain in Japanese-occupied Korea on 16 February 1942, the son of the late Chairman Kim Il-sung and Kim Jeong-suk, an anti-Japanese heroine.
  • In February 1974, Kim Jong-Il entered the Central Committee of the Worker’s Party, appointed as the future leader of DPRK.
  • On October 10, 1980 was announced as the future leader in the party committee meeting. He was appointed senior post in the Politburo.
  • On January 8, 1983, Kim Jong-un, the third son of Chairman Kim Jong-Il was born.
  • On December 24, 1991, Chairman Kim Jong-Il’s status of being the future leader was assured, appointed as the supreme commander of the Korean People's army.
  • In April 1993, Chairman Kim Jong-Il was appointed as the Chairman of National Defense Commission.
  • In July 8, 1994, he inherited the position of the Great Leader of DPRK. Kim Il-sung, the Father of DPRK died of heart attack. Kim Jong-Il ascended to the throne.
  • On October 8, 1997, Chairman Kim Jong-Il was appointed General Secretary of the Worker’s Party of Korea.
  • On June 13, 2000, the Sunshine Policy was launched between DPRK and South Korea. Chairman Kim Jong-Il of DPRK and President Kim Dae-jung attend the first summit meeting at Pyongyang after the Korean War, in which a permit was granted to explore and develop Mount Geumgang. The relation between the two Koreas was appeased.
  • On October 23, 2000, Charles Kartman visited Pyongyang in an icebreaking summit meeting, in which a talk with Kim Jong-Il was held. Kartman was the highest US official received by Chairman Kim. However, the US-DPRK relationship deteriorated after Bush was elected US president.
  • On September 17, 2002, Chairman Kim Jong-Il held a summit talk with Junichiro Koizumi, the Prime Minister of Japan in an icebreaking meeting. Both sides signed the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Manifesto.
  • On July 8, 2009, Korea International Chamber of Commerce (KICC) was established by Supreme People's Assembly under the directive of Chairman Kim Jong-Il. Ms. Kerri M. L. Zhou was appointed as the Honorary Chairman. KICC had been DPRK’s window and bridge to the international arena.
  • On August 5 2009, two US journalists were released. After KICC’s coordination and correspondence with the international societies, former US President Bill Clinton visited Pyongyang and met Chairman Kim Jong-Il. Mr. Clinton’s major objective of visiting Pyongyang was to help the two journalists released return to America. This event received high acclaim internationally. It was also the actualization of Chairman Kim Jong-Il’s humanism and appeasement international policy.
  • On September 28, 2010, the official DPRK's media mentioned the name Kim Jong-un for the first time.
  • On October 10, 2010, Kim Jong-un’s was assured as the successor to the Great Leader. In addition, Jong-un also accompanied Kim Jong-Il in the National Day Parade. Kim Jong-un appeared in front of the public.
  • December 17, 2011, Chairman Kim Jong-Il passed away. On the 19th, Radio Pyongyang announced the death of Chairman Kim Jong-Il, and Kim Jong-un would be the successor of the Great Leader officially. The third generation of DPRK’s throne was assured.

 

The Great Leader Kim Jong-Il was dedicated to democracy, to the DPRK, and Koreans during his life.
His enthusiasm to the people and the country will be remembered forever.
